Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday paid a visit to the office of the EU delegation in Armenia for the Europe Day celebrations.

"The president congratulated the Head of the EU mission in Armenia, Ambassador Peter Svitalsky, the staff of the EU Delegation in Armenia, as well as the entire EU family on the occasion of this holiday and wished them peace and prosperity," reported the Press Office of the Armenian presidency.

"It was over six decades again when one of the founding fathers of Europe, Mr. Robert Schuman made the declaration based on which the establishment of the modern day European Union commenced," said President Sargsyan. "Actually, the reputation of the EU goes far beyond its geographical borders," he added.

The president also noted that the negotiations on the new comprehensive agreement between Armenia and the EU are ongoing and that this document will be signed within a reasonable time period and consequently support the cooperation between the EU and Armenia.

"We are very grateful to the Armenian authorities for the support in organizing these events all over the country on Europe Day. From the city of Gyumri all the way to Kapan, the border with Iran, is the gates of Europe for us and all our efforts are directed at the development of relations with Armenia," said Ambassador Svitalsky.

President Sargsyan and Ambassador Svitalsky discussed projects and priorities between Armenia and the EU, including the ongoing reforms in Armenia.

The European Union continues to be one of the biggest financial donors to Armenia for implementing reforms in the private sector, state management and the justice system. It is expected that the EU will provide from 140 to 170 million Euros worth of finances for the implementations of reforms. Endit
