China supports EU in playing constructive role in UN affairs

Xinhua, June 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

China encourages and supports the European Union (EU) in continuously playing a constructive role in UN affairs, said a Chinese envoy to the UN on Monday.

Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, made the remarks at a Security Council meeting on cooperation between the UN and regional, sub-regional organizations.

"The EU is an important partner of the United Nations," said Wu, noting that cooperation between the UN and its Security Council with regional and sub-regional organizations is conducive to achieving objectives in maintaining world peace and promoting common development.

Wu said the cooperation between the UN and the EU shall follow the principles of advocating political settlement of hot-spot issues through dialogues, and respect countries' sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

The UN and the EU need to form synergy in promoting economic and social development, strengthen North-South Cooperation, help and support developing countries in achieving sustainable development goals, Wu said.

China is ready to strengthen interaction and cooperation with the EU within the UN framework, and continuously facilitate a greater role of the UN in international affairs, he added. Endi
