Zambia poised to become net fish exporter: president

Xinhua, June 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Monday said his government has embarked on a program aimed at improving the growth of fish species so that the country could become a net exporter of fish.

The Zambian leader said it was a shame that despite the country's rich water resources and the desire by the government to have the fish industry contribute more to economic growth, there was little drive to make this a reality, according to state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.

According to him, the research breeding program was aimed at increasing the number of tonnage per hectare and improving on the growth rate of the fish.

The president noted that he will soon hold discussions with relevant government agencies to see how the process could be fast-tracked so that the country moves from being an importer of fish to a net exporter.

The Zambian leader was speaking at the Copperbelt Agriculture Show in Kitwe city in the Copperbelt Province, according to the state broadcaster.

Government figures show that aquaculture fish production in Zambia grew from 9,535 tons in 2010 to 19,000 tons in 2014. Endit
