S. African police chief wounded in robbery

Xinhua, June 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Acting National Police Commissioner of South Africa Khomotso Phahlane sustained minor injuries during a robbery in Johannesburg on Sunday, police said.

Phahlane was accompanying his wife to a Spa in an upmarket suburb when two men stomred the Spa with guns.

Phahlane was injured when scuffling with the two men, trying to stop them, according to police.

The suspects escaped after firing at least one shot, said Hangwani Mlaudzi, spokesperson of the Hawks, a special anti-crime unit.

"There was a scuffle between the acting police commissioner and the two suspects. They then ran away and as they ran, a suspect fired a shot. They got into a silver Golf which is now the subject of the investigation,"Mlaudzi said.

He said an investigation was underway to determine whether Phahlane was the target.

Mlaudzi, however, said police suspected that it was a business robbery. Endit
