Ramos joins Spain squad looking for Euro history

Xinhua, June 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos and three other players who played in last Saturday's Champions League final between Atletico and Real Madrid became the final players to join up with the Spanish national squad preparing for the European Championships, which kick off under a week.

Real Madrid pair of Ramos and Lucas Vazquez and the Atletico duo of Juanfran and Koke, were the last four arrivals for Spain coach Vicente del Bosque and will almost certainly get to play in Tuesday's final preparation game which sees Spain take on Georgia a week before starting the defense of their European title against Croatia in Toulouse.

"I am looking forward to getting going, to prepare in the few days we have left and to start as well as possible in order for us to do well in the European Championship," said Ramos on arrival at the Las Rozas training ground just outside of Madrid.

If the Spanish win, it will be their third consecutive European title following triumphs in 2008 and 2012 and Ramos said he hoped to "continue making history," however, in the wake of Spain's first round exit in the 2014 World Cup, he admitted it would not be easy.

"We have been spoiled as we have got used to always winning and sometimes you can also lose. There are some great sides in France and we have to be humble. If we lose then it should teach us something, but after what happened in Brazil, we all want to show what we can do," he commented.

"Whether or not you are favorites is not a question what the press think, it is not something we enjoy and it doesn't help us. What we have to do is take things step by step," said Ramos. Endit
