Ukraine has become the largest wheat exporter to European Union (EU) countries this marketing year running between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016, a senior government official said Friday.
"We have supplied about 1.637 million tons of wheat, which amounts to 49 percent of the total EU imports. On this indicator, we have surpassed the United States, Canada and Russia together," Natalia Mykolska, Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister, wrote on her Facebook account.
She said that out of the total exports, about 950,000 tons of wheat was shipped to the EU market under the duty-free quotas established in the framework of an association agreement between the two parties.
Noting that Ukraine has already used up its wheat export quotas for this year, Mykolska said that Kiev was in talks with the 28-member block on further liberalization of Ukrain's grain access to the European market.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, since the start of the current marketing year, Ukraine has shipped abroad about 36.5 million tons of grain, in particular 15.5 million tons of wheat and 16.4 million tons of corn.
The Ukrainian government forecasted that the country's grain exports will hit a new record high of 37 million tons during this marketing year. Endi
