India objects to illegal detention of 3 engineering students in Italy

Xinhua, June 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

India said that it has strongly objected to the illegal detention of three Indian engineering students by police in Italy in a town near the border with France this week.

The three students, with valid visas, were detained by Italian police in Ventimiglia town and subsequently flown to Bari in southern Italy.

They were released hours after the Indian Embassy in Rome reportedly took up the issue of their illegal detention with Italian authorities, after it came to know about the incident.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup told media in the national capital Thursday that the Indian Embassy has strongly raised the issues with the Italian authorities.

"The Indian Embassy is in touch with the Italian authorities to ensure that adequate steps are taken to ensure that such unfortunate incidents involving Indian nationals do not recur," he said.

However, the spokesperson added: "Italian authorities have admitted that the detention of three students was a mistake on their part." Endit
