Canadian leads continental chess championship in El Salvador

After seven rounds of play, Canadian Grandmaster (GM) Anton Kovalyov leads the Continental Chess Championship in El Salvador's capital city.

Peru's GM Emilio Cordova and GM Liang Awonder from the United States are behind Kovalyov in second and third place, respectively, with five and a half points each.

Cuban GMs Lazaro Bruzon and Reinaldo Ortiz will face each other in the eighth round of the championship. Bruzon and Ortiz are tied with five points each.

The 13-year-old U.S. GM Awonder, is the tournament's newcomer and will face his compatriot Aleksandr Lenderman.

Salvadorian Ernesto Giron, candidate to be GM, so far has reached 4.5 points.

The tournament grants four places to the 2016 World Cup to be held from Nov. 11 to 30 in New York, U.S. Endit
