Xinhua, June 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bangladesh's border security force will recruit its first batch of female soldiers, the country's border force chief said Thursday.

Director General of Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Aziz Ahmed told journalists that 97 women will complete their training and be inducted into the force on Sunday.

In a major step to empower women, Bangladeshi government has given its nod for recruitment of women in a border guarding force.

Ahmed said that steps are under way to recruit 100 more women for the paramilitary force.

He said initially the women soldiers will be posted to the border areas where females are often found in drug trafficking.

he said later that female personnel will be involved in all BGB activities.

With tens of thousands of members, BGB has been guarding Bangladesh's long border line of 4,427 km with India and Myanmar. Endit
