World Bank approves 20 mln USD for Zambia's refugee integration program

Xinhua, June 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

The World Bank has approved a credit of 20 million U.S. dollars to support Zambia in implementing its program of local integration of former refugees, according to a bank statement obtained on Tuesday.

The fund aims to facilitate Zambia's efforts to improve access to livelihoods and socio-economic infrastructure for displaced people and host communities in two targeted resettlements of Meheba in north-west Zambia and Mayukwayukwa in the western part of the country, the statement added.

The Zambian integration project will contribute to social cohesion and the local integration of former refugees as well as the development of the surrounding areas by ensuring equitable share of project benefits between former refugees and host communities.

Zambia is currently implementing a local integration of former Angolan and Rwandan refugees who have opted to remain in Zambia after the cessation of their refugee status.

Conflicts and violence in neighboring countries have pushed people to flee into Zambia which currently hosts more than 52,000 refugees. Endit
