Kenya calls for vigilance during Ramadhan amid terror threats

Xinhua, May 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenyan police on Monday called on the the public to remain vigilant during Muslims holy month of Ramadhan due to possible Al-Shabaab threat.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett said while the security agencies will be doing everything possible to safeguard the country from attacks, the public is urged to exercise extra caution at all times and report anything out of the ordinary immediately to the authorities.

Boinett said the public should help security officers to deter any terror activities by Al-Shabaab elements who may have already infiltrated into the country.

"We there wish to ask all Kenyans especially those living close to the Kenya/Somalia boarder to exercise extra vigilance and report any suspicious individuals to the police," Boinnet said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

"Whereas the police as well as other national security agencies are still vigilant to deter terrorist elements from sneaking into our country, there are indications that some Al-Shabaab terrorists fleeing from AMISOM action in Somalia, could be making attempts to infiltrate into our country and stage attacks during the Holy month of Ramadan," he said.

According to Boinett, the areas especially vulnerable to infiltration include Arabia, Fino, Elwak in Mandera country and IIkambere, Kolbio areas in Garrisa Country in northeast Kenya and the outlaying Boni Forest in the coastal region.

The latest warning comes as the police released details of eight suspected terrorists they believe could be planning to carry out attacks in the country especially in the coastal region.

The police urged the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects believed to be very dangerous and who may have returned from Somalia.

"The public may also use the Toll Free numbers 999, 911 and 112 should anyone sight any of these persons who are on the run," Boinett said. Endit
