Interview: Togolese president praises "outstanding" cooperation with China

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe on Friday hailed the "outstanding and intense" cooperative relations between Togo and China.

"Where your heart is, your feet are not reluctant to go," he told Xinhua before his departure for a state visit to China.

Gnassingbe said he will discuss with Chinese President Xi Jinping some major issues of common interest during the visit.

These issues, he said, had been touched upon in the margins of a summit of the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation in December 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"This visit will provide us with the opportunity to discover some of China's greatest achievements that we could draw on," he added, noting that valuable political, economic and technical cooperation between Togo and China has grown considerably.

This has been made possible amid a boost in their links since the first visit to China in September 1974 of the late Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema.

China and Togo have, at the political level, the same views on major international issues and are mutually supportive on the international scene, said the president.

Togo affirms the "one-China" policy and also calls for an enhanced role of China in solving international conflicts, he said.

Gnassingbe also recalled that several major agreements and protocols have been reached between the two countries, which constitute the legal cornerstones of their cooperation.

"The achievements of the cooperation are remarkable in the fields of politics, culture and education as well as in economic and social fields," he said.

The Togolese president also commended the logistics support that China provided to Togo in its efforts to organize an international conference on maritime security in October 2016.

"Our country sustains particularly the fight against maritime insecurity as the means to protect international trade," he said.

"Our vision is that the phenomenon of terrorism and increasing insecurity be settled within a framework of enhanced international cooperation," said the president. Endi
