Germany Latvia's most important strategic partner in Europe: Latvian president

Xinhua, May 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Germany has been Latvia's most important strategic partner in Europe since the restoration of Latvia's independence, President Raimonds Vejonis said Friday during a visit by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Both countries have developed close cooperation on security, business exchange and education, as well as other areas, Vejonis added.

The two leaders discussed preparations for the upcoming NATO summit due to take place in Warsaw in July, as well as Latvian-German bilateral ties.

"We expect decisions of the NATO summit in July to boost the Alliance's long-term presence in the region, ensuring defense against any kinds of threats," Vejonis said.

He also thanked Germany for its active role in bolstering the region's security, especially noting Germany's involvement in the NATO-led missions in the Baltic states.

Vejonis and Steinmeier also talked about the necessity to strengthen resistance to hybrid threats both in EU and NATO countries and their neighborhood. Enditem
