Over 5,000 killed in Burkina Faso road traffic accidents between 2010-2015

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

In Burkina Faso, 5,046 people were killed and 73,536 others injured in a total of 84,117 road traffic accidents registered between 2010-2015, the transport minister on Thursday said in Ouagadougou.

The Minister of Transport, Urban Mobility and Road Safety, Souleymane Soulama, made this public during a joint press conference with the minister of security and justice on Thursday in the capital Ouagadougou.

"Speeding, reckless driving, non-compliance with traffic rules" are among causes and contributing factors of road traffic accidents, he explained.

The meeting with the press came a week after the collision of a car and a truck that killed 24 people and left 36 others injured in a city close to Boromo, at about 170 km West to Ouagadougou.

"The government is around to display its firm commitment to fight anti-social conduct on our roads and to call on security forces for flawless professionalism," Soulama announced.

He added that the government of Burkina has taken measures to ensure the full compliance with road traffic regulations in the country.

These include the installation of devices to limit speed in urban and rural areas, as well as of devices that can help determine driving and rest times of drivers, the minister added.

Soulama further said security forces will be equipped with radars to see to the implementation of the measures taken. Endit
