Tanzanian president appeals to local contractors to fight graft

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Thursday appealed to local contractors to fight against corruption in the construction industry.

"Instead local contractors should be at the forefront in reporting public officials who solicit bribe before they (the contractors) are given construction deals," said the president in the country's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

Opening a meeting of Contractors Registration Board (CRB), Magufuli said: "I am appealing to you to hate and fight corruption when seeking construction deals from public officials."

He added that the contractors should report public officials soliciting bribe to relevant authorities so that measures should be taken against them.

The president requested the local contractors to tender bids for the implementation of big projects such as the 4 billion U.S. dollars 1,400 km oil pipeline which will connect Uganda's western region near Hoima, where big oil reserves have been discovered, with Tanzania's port of Tanga.

He added that the local contractors should also grab opportunities to construct the planned standard gauge railway track and industries in the country, and the central corridor that will connect Mwanza, Kigoma, Burundi and Rwanda.

Valentine Mlowoka, the Director General of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), said his institution will use resources at its disposal to fight corruption in the construction industry which he said was rife. Endit
