Tokyo shares close mixed with earlier gains offset by yen's appreciation

Tokyo stocks closed mixed Thursday, with earlier gains on firm U.S. stocks overnight offset by a strong yen.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 15.11 points, or 0.09 percent, from Wednesday at 16,772.46, a roughly one-month high.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 0.01 point lower at 1,342.87.

Gainers were led by mining and pharmaceutical issues, while decliners were led by marine transportation and securities.

The day's turnover was about 1,834.3 billion yen (around 16.72 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
