Across China: North China speeds up cross-border logistic services

Xinhua, May 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Border regions in north China are picking up the logistic services pace to meet the rising demand for international mail services.

A new rail route for mail has been launched from Beijing to Moscow, an official with the border control authorities of Erenhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, said on Tuesday.

The weekly train leaves Erenhot and arrives at Moscow through Mongolia, cutting delivery time to only five days, 35 days shorter than the original delivery by ship.

The first batch of international mails, around 10 bags totalling 184.5 kg, were delivered to Moscow on Monday. Mobiles, watches and electronic parts were included in the bags.

The new route, with lower cost than air cargo transport and shorter delivery time than shipping services, will bring benefits for China-Russia e-commerce, said the official.

Jilin Province, a traditional industrial hub that has lost its shine for exhausting resources and overcapacity, is also boosting logistic-related services, aiming at structural transformation by developing e-commerce.

At Xinglong Bonded Zone in the provincial capital of Changchun, SF Express, China's leading delivery company, is building an e-commerce industrial park. With an initial investment of 1 billion yuan (152.5 million U.S. dollars), the park is expected to bring an annual revenue of 350 million yuan by 2018 by collecting and delivering all international parcels from north and northeast China, said Jin Kaixiang, a manager in charge of the Russia-destined parcel services.

The company last year launched charter flight services from Changchun to Moscow, through which parcels were delivered to countries such as Belarus, Ukraine and Estonia. "The route is very competitive," said Jin.

Apart from SF Express, the bonded zone has also attracted top e-shopping platforms and express delivery companies such as Alibaba and Shentong to establish cross-border e-commerce service center.

Zhao Shuang, an official with the administration of the bonded zone, said there had been 3.87 million parcels sent overseas in the first quarter at the zone, with a total cargo value of 20 million U.S. dollars.

Daily processing capacity is now 100,000 pieces, with parcels transported to more than 140 countries and regions via the zone, said Zhao.

International trains also connect the ports of Dalian, Yingkou, Dandong and Tianjin, carrying cargo to Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany.

According to Zhao, Xinglong Bonded Zone is also planing to expand charter flight coverage to central Europe.

"Changchun has become an important hub for international e-commerce services in China," he said. Endi
