Xinhua, May 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar underpinned a grim market mood that mirrored Wall Street's losses overnight and saw issues offloaded.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 155.84 points, or 0.94 percent, from Monday to close at 16,498.76.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 12.18 points, or 0.91 percent, to finish the day at 1,326.50.

With the exception of pulp and paper, and air transportation stocks, all issues ended in negative territory, with insurance, mining and nonferrous metal-linked stocks comprising the biggest decliners.

Trading volume on the main section dropped to 1,627.83 million shares, marking the lowest level this year, from Monday's 1,730.82 million shares, with declining issues beating advancing ones by 1,272 to 529 on the First Section.

The day's turnover was 1,665.8 billion yen (15.23 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
