EU countries fare well in global digital nations list: EU report

Xinhua, May 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

European Union (EU) countries fared well in a list comparing the world's most digitized nations and regions, according to data published by the European Commission on Monday.

The International Digital Economy and Society Index evaluated the performance of both individual EU countries and the EU as a whole in comparison to 15 other countries.

The overall results show that top European performers also lead globally, but Europe as a whole has room for improvement, said the European Commission.

The best performing countries were Sweden, Denmark and Finland, closely followed by South Korea, the United States and Japan.

The EU as a whole scored high in three out of the five main criteria, which were use of the internet, human capital, and integration of digital technology.

Meanwhile, the EU was behind top non-EU performers in connectivity and digital public services.

The results of this report show that although European countries can compare with the best worldwide, the EU as a whole is not on par with global top performers.

Europe is progressing to slowly bridge this gap, which is pivotal to realizing the potential of a Digital Single Market, added the Commission. Endit
