Calls for dialogue to restore peace in Republic of Congo

Xinhua, May 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

One of the nine candidates in the March 20, 2016 presidential elections in the Republic of Congo, Anguios Nganguia Engambe, over the weekend urged Congolese authorities to organize national dialogue to restore lasting peace in the country.

"One of the most powerful weapon in our society is dialogue. This is why we believe there is need for all Congolese political leaders to sit together and find consensual solutions to the challenges facing the country," Engambe said.

He said the proposed dialogue should be led by the prime minister and representatives of the nine candidates in the March 20 presidential elections.

According to Engambe, the agenda of the talks will include discussion on establishment of a biometric voter's register, release of all political prisoners, allowing political leaders to freely express themselves and revision of the electoral register to facilitate free and fair legislative, local as well as senatorial elections.

"To ease the tension that has been mounting since the presidential elections, an agenda for the dialogue should be drafted as soon as possible," he concluded. Endit
