-- Police have arrested Zambia's opposition leader over alleged assault and conduct likely to cause violence.

Geoffrey Mwamba, vice president of the main opposition United Party for National Development (UPND), was arrested in Ndola city in the Copperbelt Province after eluding the police for two days.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga said the opposition leader was cornered at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport as he was about to board a flight to Lusaka, the country's capital.

He has since been slapped with three charges of assault occasioning bodily harm, malicious damage to property and action likely to cause a breach of peace.

The opposition leader is currently appearing in court on other charges and has labeled his arrests as ploy meant to silence the opposition ahead of the August 11 polls. (ZAMBIA DAILY MAIL)

-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu has warned ministers not to abuse public resources when carrying out political campaigns since the ruling party has enough resources to funds its campaigns.

Lungu said the Patriotic Front would mobilize its own resources to campaign for the August 11 polls without relying on government resources.

The Zambian leader said he would not protect any minister found abusing public resources but would allow the due process of the law to take its course.

Under the Zambian constitution, only a president and his vice are allowed to use public resources during campaigns. (DAILY NATION) Edit
