Meng Jianzhu meets with Belgian PM Michel to enhance bilateral ties

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel met here Thursday with Meng Jianzhu, the special envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping, on bilateral ties.

Meng, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, first conveyed to Michel the greetings of President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

Meng said Belgium is China's important partner in Europe. At present, relations between China and Belgium are constantly developing, the cooperation between the two countries in the economic and trade, cultural, scientific and technological fields are fruitful.

China attaches great importance to relations between China and Belgium, and is willing to make joint efforts with Belgium to enhance bilateral all-round friendly and cooperative partnership to a new level, said Meng.

Meng said terrorism posed a serious threat to the world.

"Once I arrived in Brussels, I've gone to the metro station which was under terror attack in March this year, presented flowers to the victims, and expressed condolences to the families of the victims," said Meng.

The Chinese government firmly supports the just position of Belgium against terrorism and is willing to strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation with Belgium, to work together to address the threat of terrorism, he added.

Prime Minister Michel asked Meng to convey his greetings to President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, thanked the Chinese government's condolences to Belgium after Brussels terror attacks.

Michel said the relations between Belgium and China have maintained good momentum of development, bilateral cooperation has made significant progress in all areas.

Belgium and China's development paths are different, but they share common interests and objectives in the interests of national security and the safety of life and property of citizens, in promoting peace and inclusive development and so on, according to Michel.

Belgium is willing to work with China to promote counter-terrorism and law enforcement and security cooperation, said Michel.

During the visit, Meng also respectively met and held talks with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Jan Jambon, Minister of Justice Koen Geens and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. Endit
