Strong 2nd half steers China over Czech Republic in women's basketball warmup

Xinhua, May 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Thanks to a 36-22 second half, Chinese women's basketball team beat Czech Republic 71-49 in 2016 Four-Nation Women's Basketball Tournament, romping to their fifth straight win of the tournament here on Friday.

11 Chinese players scored points, led by Chen Nan and Huang Hongpin's 12 apiece.

"We kept them under 50 points, which is always hard to do. But we are not playing fast and dynamicly as we like," said China's head coach Thomas Maher.

China kept the same starting line-up as Thursday's 90-52 crush over New Zealand. Chen Nan made the first shot of the game with a layup, while Czech Republic showed their toughness during the next few minutes. Huang Hongpin's jumper earned the hosts a 15-12 lead as the first quarter expired.

China took on a 12-3 run midway through the second period to pull away the game, capped by Shao Ting's layup with 3:50 to go, setting the score at 29-19, China's first double-digit lead after the tip-off. China overcame seven turnovers in this quarter to build a 35-27 lead into the locker room.

Chen Nan and Sun Mengran, two post starters, combined 10 points early in the second half to lead China on a 12-0 storm, while their opponents were held to no field goals in an almost-half-quarter span.

Up by 15 to begin the last quarter, the hosts extended their lead to over 20 points on Wu Di's six points in a row. Gao Song's three-point play with 2:16 remaining helped China lead by as many as 25 points.

As the only Czech Republic player to hit double-figure points, Tereza Vyoralova finished with a game-high 22.

"Both sides played at a high level in the first half. Our opponents did well in teamwork," commented Ivan Benes, Czech Republic's head coach.

China will face Montenegro on Saturday in their final warmup in homeland ahead of Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Endit
