German gov't criticizes Fiat as "uncooperative" in emissions probe

The German government criticized on Thursday that Italian automaker Fiat was "uncooperative" in a probe into emissions irregularities of its diesel vehicles.
The company was due to attend a meeting with German authorities on Thursday to discuss the emissions issue, but it canceled the appointment through a lawyer's letter, said the German Federal Transport Ministry in a statement.
Fiat claimed in the letter that only Italian authorities are responsible for investigating whether Fiat violated the European Union's emissions regulations, according to the German ministry.
"This uncooperative attitude of Fiat is completely incomprehensible," said German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt, adding that there were "concrete allegations" about irregular emissions of Fiat vehicles.
Shortly after the revelation of German automaker Volkswagen's emissions scandal last year, the German authorities launched a probe on 53 German and foreign car models. A number of 22 models from 16 car brands, including Fiat, showed emission irregularities.
Last month, five German carmakers, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche, agreed voluntarily to recall 630,000 vehicles in Europe to fix diesel emissions management software. Endit
