Ghana Black Stars' captain Asamoah Gyan has been nominated for this year' s Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Sports Personality of the Year award to be held on June 4, 2016.
This year's SWAG Awards, sponsored by communication giants MTN, is expected to confer honors on over 26 sportsmen and women drawn from various sporting disciplines for their contribution to the development of respective sports in the country in 2015.
Gyan, who plays for Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG, will face stiff opposition for the top award from compatriot Andre Ayew of English premiership side Swansea, Yusif Basigi, coach of the national women' s team, as well as Bashir Hayford, coach of last season' s league winners, Ashantigold SC.
The minster of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye, commended the executives of SWAG for upholding the dignity and prestige that has been associated with the awards over the years.
The President of SWAG, Kwabena Yeboah, said his group would never get jaded as it continued to award sportsmen and women, a tradition that has traveled 40 long years.
The Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Cynthia Lumor, congratulated sports writers for their commitment towards recognizing sports personalities for excelling in the various disciplines.
She said recognizing and rewarding excellence was part of the MTN culture.
"We believe that this annual event by SWAG is very important and has to be supported," she noted.
Since its inception in 1974, the awards has been Ghana' s most esteemed celebration of sporting excellence and provided the biggest platform to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Ghana sports. Endit
