Bomb attack on election celebratory rally leaves one dead in India

One person was killed and several others wounded Thursday during an election violence in India's southern state of Kerala, officials said.

The causality was reported in Kannur district, about 465 km north of Thiruvanthapuram, the capital city of Kerala.

"A country-made bomb was hurled at the celebratory meeting in Kannur, which killed a person and wounded four others," an official said. "The slain person was a supporter of Left Democratic Front (LDF) that won the elections in the state."

Reports said at several places activists of India's ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) clashed with activists of the Left.

The LDF has won the local elections, thereby ending the Congress party's rule in the state.

The BJP has won a seat for the first time in the state.

Run up to the election saw killings of activists from both the Left and the BJP. Counting of votes for 140-strong Assembly took place during the day. The LDF bagged 91 seats, while as the Congress-led alliance won 47 seats. Endit
