Russia to complete S-300 shipments to Iran by end of 2016

Xinhua, May 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

The delivery of S-300 missile systems to Iran would be finished by the end of 2016, Russian presidential aide Vladimir Kozhin said Thursday.

"The first batch has now been unloaded, approximately a battalion. We will continue to fulfill our commitments until year-end," Kozhin was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti news agency.

An S-300 battalion includes several launcher vehicles with four missiles each, command and control vehicles, as well as long-range radar vehicles.

Russia and Iran signed an 800-million-U.S. dollar contract in 2007, according to which Moscow would supply Tehran with five S-300 missile systems.

In September 2010, then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev canceled the contract in line with a United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution, which banned such deals with the Islamic Republic. Iran later sued Russia over the arms embargo at the International Court of Arbitration.

In April 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban as Iran withdrew the lawsuit against Russia, which has started to deliver the S-300 missile systems to Iran since this April.

Iran has already prepared all necessary documents to withdraw the lawsuit, Kozhin said. Endi
