Local offices of the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) in Burkina Faso's southwest region of Bouroum Bouroum and central-east region of Beguedo, have been ransacked by angry residents, hence jeopardizing the forthcoming municipal elections in these localities.
A source from CENI said the office in Beguedo was targeted by protesters on May 12, leading to enormous destruction of properties, while the one at Bouroum Bouroum was razed down on May 17 by unknown individuals.
Electoral campaigns which began on May 7 and are expected to close by May 20, have been going on across the national territory without much fanfare.
Some few incidents of violence were reported in the course of the campaigns.
CENI President Barthelemy Kere deplored the acts of vandalism and appealed for calm and restraint from the population, to ensure the May 22 local elections are held in a peaceful environment.
A total of 156,693 candidates are expected to battle it out for 19,624 seats in 9,299 electoral constituencies.
Over 5.5 million voters have been registered to vote in 17,938 polling stations spread across the country. Endit
