Tokyo stocks close flat on likely easing pause, Fed rate hike prospect

Xinhua, May 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tokyo stocks ended largely flat Thursday as gains made in the morning on the yen's depreciation were later erased by speculation the government here will hold off on further easing measures and compounded by the prospect of a rate hike in June by the U.S Federal Reserve.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 1.97 points, or 0.01 percent, from Wednesday to close at 16,646.66.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.82 points, or 0.14 percent, to end the day at 1,336.56.

Issues that advanced comprised insurance and miscellaneous products, but those related to mining and oil and coal product issues were among notable decliners at the close.

The day's turnover was 1,922.7 billion yen (17.45 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
