Namibia calls for more efforts over children protection

Namibia's Deputy Minister of Gender and Child Welfare Lucia Witbooi on Wednesday called for a holistic approach and strong focus on educating children on how to protect themselves from cyber bullying.

Witbooi made the call while opening the first ever National Conference on Child Online Protection; Preventing and Tackling Child Exploitation and Abuse in Namibia.

The two-day conference brings together UN officials, Namibian and global leaders as they seek ways to address and tackle the rising concern of child online protection, including sexual exploitation, trafficking and cyber bullying amongst others.

"The aim is to develop and review the institutional Framework for Online Child Safety for Namibia," said Witbooi, adding that "Due to increased usage of information communication technology, children are more in direct contact with especially social media hence they are exposed to risks while online".

Micaela Marques De Sousa concurs, a representative of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, said that Namibian children are online, and, unaware of the negative implications when children are posting their personal information on social media.

"Namibia cannot therefore sit in silence, bury itself or shy away from this issue," she added. Endit
