Portuguese urban artist awarded for transforming city's face

Xinhua, May 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portuguese urban artist Alexandre Farto, known as Vhils, has been awarded for changing the face of cities across the world in an innovative way.

Vhils was awarded the Martha de la Cal personality of 2015 prize for his contribution to making Lisbon a center of urban art, Alison Roberts, head of Portugal's foreign press association AIEP told the audience at Lisbon's IADE creative university Monday evening.

Roberts also highlighted Vhils' role in transforming degraded walls in numerous countries across the globe.

Vhils has reinvented murals in over 50 countries across the world, including in Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai and Sydney, and launched a video for the band U2.

Vhils etches portraits on derelict buildings, scraping and chiselling on walls using drills and abrasive materials like household bleach and etching acid. Endi
