Top news items in major Zambia media outlets

The following are the highlights of Zambia's major media outlets on Monday.

-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu is this week scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia on a state visit meant to cement ties between the two countries.

Zambia's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ibrahim Mumba said the two-day visit will culminate in the two countries signing various trade agreements covering oil supply, agriculture, investment funding and the health sector.

During the visit, the Zambian leader will hold discussions with King Abdulaziz al Saudi and other leaders as well as interact with the business community in that country that had shown interest to invest in Zambia. (TIMES OF ZAMBIA)

-- Zambia and South Africa will next week launch a business forum aimed at promoting business linkages between the two countries.

President Edgar Lungu will launch the Zambia chapter of the Zambia-South Africa Business Forum (ZSABC).

The forum will comprise of South African investors operating in Zambia and those based in their country.

A statement released by the Zambian Embassy in South Africa said the launch will be held on May 27 and will also be attended by officials from South Africa's Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Small Business Development. (ZAMBIA DAILY MAIL)

-- The Zambian kwacha has depreciated after demand for the U.S. dollar continues to outweigh supply, according to financial analysts.

Financial analysts have predicted that the situation will continue until the end of this month because the supply will continue to be intermittent. (THE POST)

-- Zambia's electoral body said it will allow candidates with qualifications higher than a senior secondary school certificate to participate in this year's general election.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) said this would be after such qualifications have been verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZQA) or the institutions that issued.

The move comes after a court ruled last week that candidates without a senior secondary school certificate but with other tertiary qualifications should be allowed to contest for the August 11 presidential, parliamentary and local government election.

The electoral body said early this year that people without a senior secondary school certificate will not be allowed to stand as candidates in this year' polls. (DAILY NATION) Endit
