Colombia seizes 8 tons of cocaine

Xinhua, May 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Colombian police on Sunday seized eight tons of cocaine from the Usuga Clan, a leading crime gang in the country, near the border with Panama.

Police said in a statement that the cocaine, valued at 240 million U.S. dollars, was found in a cache in a banana farm in Turbo, a port town in Antioquia Department. Three people were arrested in the raid.

"The biggest seizure of drugs in history. A hit against criminals," Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos said on Twitter.

The Usuga Clan is charged with smuggling drugs from Colombia to the United States, with the latter offering a 5-million-dollar reward for the capture of the gang's leader.

Colombia is one of the world's largest producers of cocaine. It produces some 422 tons of cocaine annually, according to the United Nations.

In 2015, Colombian authorities seized 252 tons of cocaine. Endi
