Gun battle kills 13 militants, wounds 15 in N. Afghanistan

Gun battle between government forces and the Taliban militants have left 13 armed insurgents dead and injured 15 others in Chashma-e-Shir area in the outskirt of Baghlan provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri 160 km north of Kabul Saturday night, a spokesman for police in the province, Jawed Basharat said Sunday.

"Taliban rebels attacked security checkpoints in Chashma-e-Shir area Saturday night triggering gun battle which lasted for hours and finally the militants fled away," Basharat told reporters here.

Chashma-e-Shir village situated next to a major highway linking the national capital Kabul to six northern provinces including the largest northern Mazar-e-Sharif city and the fighting led to closure of the highway for a while, the official confirmed.

"The highway is open and the movement of traffic is continuing as usual," Basharat said.

Meantime, the sporadic fighting, according to locals has been continuing in Chashma-e-Shir village of Dand-e-Shahabudin and its neighboring Dand-e-Ghori districts.

Taliban militants haven't yet commented. Enditem
