Natural disasters kill 53 people in April

Xinhua, May 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Natural disasters left 53 people dead, 16 unaccounted for, and affected more than 5.6 million people across China in April, according to official figures.

The disasters included drought, earthquakes, floods, forest fires, gales and hail and caused about 3.6 billion yuan (about 550 million U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said on Friday in a statement.

More than 53,000 people had to be relocated, 28,000 of whom needed emergency assistance. About 6,000 houses collapsed, mostly in southern regions hit by floods.

Overall damage was generally less than in the same period last year, when 68 people were killed. Endit
