UN appoints Erik Solheim of Norway as environment head

The UN General Assembly on Friday elected Erik Solheim of Norway as executive director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) for a four-year term.

Solheim will succeed Achim Steiner of Germany, whose term will end in June, 2016.

Solheim is currently the chair of the Development Assistance Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a post he has held since 2013.

He is also serving as UNEP's Special Envoy for environment, conflict and disaster.

From 2007 to 2012, Solheim served as Norway's minister for the Environment and International Development.

Born in 1955, he is married, with four children. Enditem
