3 killed, 2 missing after cloudburst hit Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, May 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three school children were washed away, while two villagers went missing after cloudburst triggering flash floods hit Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said Friday.

The cloudburst hit several areas in Jammu province of Indian-controlled Kashmir Thursday evening.

"Three children were washed away due to cloudburst in Batote and Kud areas of the hilly district of Udhampur, while two villagers went missing in flooded stream in Mahore area of adjoining Reasi district yesterday," an official said.

"Three children who were returning from school got trapped in the Nallah and were washed away." Officials said the other children following them had a miraculous escape.

The two missing villagers according to officials are feared killed.

Reports said the gushing water along with rocks, bushes, trees and logs flowed down the stream from the mountains and caused extensive damage to the roads and some houses and shops.

The heavy rains also triggered landslides, blocking key roads and highway and resulted in stranding of large number of vehicles. Endit
