Dortmund scoop up Ousmane Dembele from Stade Rennes

Xinhua, May 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Borussia Dortmund have signed Stade Rennes' youngster talent Ousamne Dembele, the eight-time German champions confirmed in an official statement on Thursday.

The 18-year-old striker, who established himself as one of France' s rising stars, has put pen to paper on a five-year deal, which keeps him until June 2021 in Dortmund. Both sides agreed to keep silence over further contract details.

"Ousmane can play on almost every position in the offense," Dortmund' s sporting director Michael Zorc said. "He is strong in the one-on-one, can finish with both feet, is skilful, fast and a threat in front of the goal."

Dembele has just been voted as Ligue 1 Young Player of the Season last week. The striker joined Rennes as a 13-year-old in 2010, making his breakthrough to the first-team after scoring his first goal on his full debut against Bordeaux in November 2015. He scored twelve goals in 25 appearances.

"Dortmund were very early after me and always kept close contact. This behaviour has really impressed me. The sportive concept of Dortmund convinced me absolutely. I can not wait to play in the Bundesliga and Champions League with my new teammates in front of more than 80,000 spectators at the Signal-Iduna Park," the new arrival said.

Within three years, Dembele worked his way up from France' s national Under-17 to the Under-21 team, where he made two international caps.

Dortmund already secured the second place in the German Bundesliga with one round to spare this season. Endit
