Bastos gives Sao Paulo edge in Copa Libertadores quarters

Xinhua, May 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Former Brazil international midfielder Michel Bastos scored late to hand Sao Paulo a 1-0 victory over Brazilian rivals Atletico Mineiro in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Bastos broke the deadlock in the 79th minute when he headed in Wesley's curling free kick at Sao Paulo's Morumbi stadium.

Sao Paulo need only a draw in next Wednesday's return leg in Belo Horizonte to secure a semifinal berth.

The Copa Libertadores is Latin America's most prized club trophy, comprising teams from South America and Mexico.

In Thursdays quarterfinals, Uruguay's Nacional will host Buenos Aires giants Boca Juniors while Argentina's Rosario are at home to Atletico Nacional of Colombia. Endit
