Fans injured after stadium railing collapse

Xinhua, May 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than a dozen football fans were injured on Wednesday when a stadium railing collapsed during a Copa Libertadores match in Brazil.

The incident occurred moments after former Brazil international midfielder Michel Bastos scored a late goal as hosts Sao Paulo beat Brazilian rivals Atletico Mineiro 1-0 in the first leg of their quarterfinal.

Television footage showed the injured fans fell about three meters to the ground from the Morumbi stadium's first tier.

Officials said the metal barrier at the front of the grandstand gave way due to pressure from supporters who were celebrating Bastos' goal.

The game was halted for about five minutes while an ambulance crew came to the aid of at least one fan. Endit
