50 taken ill in India's Rajasthan after drinking contaminated water

At least 50 people were taken ill apparently after drinking contaminated water in India's western state of Rajasthan, officials said Wednesday.

The incident took place at Kanuta area of Jaipur city, the capital of Rajasthan.

"We have dispatched our medical team to the area to provide medical aid to the people," an official said.

Officials said those people complained of nausea and stomach ache, following which they were provided medical assistance.

India's official broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) quoted a senior official of state's health department as saying that 41 people were given treatment and the remaining were admitted to a hospital in Jaipur.

The authorities have collected water samples from different places at Kanuta and sent them for laboratory testing.

Last month 11 people with special needs staying at a government-run residential facility died under mysterious circumstances in the state.

Doctors suspected the deceased had consumed contaminated drinking water.

Reports said the residential facility was not having a reverse osmosis purification system and residents were drinking water from a bore well. Endit
