Kittel claims second Giro stage in Nijmegen sprint

Xinhua, May 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

German cyclist Marcel Kittel won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia, the tour of Italy, on Saturday by claiming the victory in a bunch sprint in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

After Tom Dumoulin's first stage win on Friday in Apeldoorn the second stage in line went over 190 kilometers from Arnhem to Nijmegen.

An early breakaway group of three riders, the Italians Omar Fraile Matarranza (Dimension Data) and Giacomo Berlato (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and the Dutchman Maarten Tjallingii (LottoNL-Jumbo), had a maximum advantage of seven minutes, but they were caught in the final rounds in the city of Nijmegen, in the province of Gelderland.

The teams of the sprinters lined up to get a bunch sprint and they succeeded. Kittel (Etixx-QuickStep) proved superior to his opponents and won before Arnaud Demare (FDJ), Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) and Moreno Hofland (LottoNL-Jumbo).

Supported by his Giant-Alpecin team-mates Dutchman Dumoulin had no trouble to consolidate his pink leaders jersey. The Giro continues on Sunday with the last stage in the Netherlands, from Nijmegen to Arnhem. After a rest day on Monday the grand tour resumes on Tuesday in Italy. Endit
