Dutch Giant-Alpecin rider Tom Dumoulin excited the home crowd by winning the first stage of the Giro d'Italia, the tour of Italy, on Friday in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.

With a time of 11 minutes and 3 seconds Dumoulin recorded almost the same time as Primoz Roglic in the time trial of 9.8 kilometers in Apeldoorn, but the Dutchman was 0.022 faster than the Slovenian LottoNL-Jumbo rider. As a result Dumoulin pulled on the pink jersey as first leader in the grand tour afterwards.

Andrey Amador finished third on 6 seconds, while Tobias Ludvigsson and Marcel Kittel became fourth and fifth on 8 and 11 seconds respectively.

For the third time the Giro d'Italia started in the Netherlands, after 2002 in Groningen and 2010 in Amsterdam. The start of the race attracted tens of thousands spectators to the city in the Dutch province of Gelderland.

The Giro will continue on Saturday with the second stage from Arnhem to Nijmegen and on Sunday with the third stage from Nijmegen to Arnhem. After a rest day on Monday the Giro resumes on Tuesday in Catanzaro, Italy. Endit
