Over 10 tonnes of fake jellyfish seized in east China

Xinhua, May 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than 10 tonnes of fake jellyfish have been seized in east China's Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, police said Friday.

Police with Zhejiang's Huzhou City said they detained three suspects last month for selling artificial jellyfish in a rural market in Wuxing District, with over 150 kg of the product confiscated.

One of the suspects, surnamed Yuan, said they started making the fake delicacy with sodium alginate, calcium chloride and aluminum sulfate in June 2015, and made more than 70,000 yuan (10,773 U.S. dollars) in profits since then.

Yuan's detention also led police to three other suspects in Jiangsu's Changzhou City, where more than 10 tonnes of fake jellyfish were seized.

Tests show that the man-made jellyfish slices contain levels of aluminum much higher than the national standard.

Further investigation is under way. Endi
