Indian gov't sacks 33 bureaucrats for non-performance

In a stern message to non-performing bureaucrats, the Indian government has sacked 33 senior officials of the revenue department at one go.

Sources said Friday that the officials have been ordered by the government to take premature retirement from service for inefficiency and poor performance.

But this is not the first time that drastic action have been taken against work shirkers. Over the past two years, at least 72 senior officials were shown the door.

"All the 105 officials were class I grade and are above 50 years of age. But they had failed to match up to the expectations of the Indian government, so the action against them," the sources said.

In fact, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message to bureaucrats is very clear -- perform or perish. In January, he had asked all departmental secretaries to act against non-performers.

"Non-performance will no longer be tolerated by the Indian government. To stay on in the job, all officers have to perform. Good governance is the government's motto," the sources said. Endit
