Over 1,000 people killed in DR Congo's North Kivu province since 2014

About 1,017 people have been killed since 2014 by rebel groups in Beni and Lubero territories in North Kivu province, east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), civil society groups in the province said Tuesday.

According to the sources, the armed groups that include some from Uganda, have kidnapped about 1,391 people and raped 41 women in Beni and Lubero territories during the same period.

"We urge the government to do everything to end violence in the region. We further urge the international community to launch investigations on the crimes committed in Beni and Lubero territories," civil society coordinator in Beni, Gilbert Kambale, said.

The civil society groups which had met to review the security situation in their region, urged the government to end violence targeting civilians in North Kivu province. Endit
