"Hamilton" makes Broadway history, leading with 16 Tony nominations

Hip-hop musical "Hamilton" grabs a record-breaking 16 Tony Awards nominations on Tuesday, surpassing "The Producers" and "Billy Elliot" to become the most nominated show in Broadway history.

"Book of Mormon" actors Nikki M. James and Andrew Rannells announced the nominees Tuesday at the Paramount Hotel in New York, which were selected by 47 theater experts.

Created by Tony Awards winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, "Hamilton" tells the story of U.S. founding father and first Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton through innovative hip-hop music style.

The musical officially premiered on Broadway in August 2015 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and became an instant hit, received critical acclaim and unprecedented tickets demand - tickets have already been sold out until January 2017 and resell price averaged a whopping 1,200 U.S. dollars.

The musical sensation also just received a nod from the Pulitzer Prize, winning best drama for the centennial of the prize on April 18.

The record-setting 16 nominations for "Hamilton" displayed recognition from the theater community in every single category the musical was qualified to compete, including acting, writing, directing and design. Miranda himself received three nods for best leading actor in a musical, best original score and best book of a musical.

Top contenders to compete with "Hamilton" in the Best Musical category are "Shuffle Along", "Bright Star", "School of Rock" and "Waitress", while "Eclipsed", "The Father", "The Humans" and "King Charles III" are going to fight for Best Play.

Notable stars who nabbed acting nominations included Academy Awards winner Lupita Nyong'o for her role in the play "Eclipsed", and Jeff Daniels of the HBO hit show "Newsroom" for the play "Blackbird."

The 70th Annual Tony Awards ceremony will be held June 12 at the Beacon Theatre in uptown New York with host James Corden of "The Late Late Show." Enditem
