Turkish war jets kill 18 PKK militants in northern Iraq

Xinhua, May 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Eighteen militants of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) were killed as Turkish warplanes struck PKK targets in northern Iraq late Monday, the Turkish military said on Tuesday.

The Turkish jets carried out raids on positions in Qandil region in northern Iraq on Monday night, killing 18 PKK members, said a statement issued by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces.

Turkish warplanes also destroyed the PKK targets in Qandil, northern Iraq, according to the statement.

Since a two-year cease-fire between the government and the PKK disintegrated last July, Turkish security forces have launched a major campaign against the PKK in southeast Turkey, leaving over 400 government soldiers and over 3,700 PKK members dead.

The PKK, waging a separatist war against Turkey since 1984, is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. Endit
