Philippines ready for May 9 polls

Xinhua, May 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Philippine government said Tuesday that all systems are ready for the holding of the May 9 elections.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said that all the concerned agencies have been doing everything to ensure orderly, peaceful and meaningful polls on Monday.

The police and the military deputized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), have been specifically focusing on so-called "hotspot" areas where rivalry of candidates has been intense, he said.

Comlec Chairman Andres Bautista has said that the poll body is more prepared for the upcoming elections than in the 2010 synchronized national and local polls and in 2013 midterm elections.

Some 54.36 million Filipinos will be trooping to different precincts to cast their votes on Monday.

Five candidates are vying for the presidency. Endit
