Syria: Airstrikes kill 13 civilians in IS-controlled al-Raqqa

Xinhua, May 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 13 civilians were killed in airstrikes on areas in Syria's northern province of al-Raqqa, the de facto capital of the Islamic State (IS) group, a monitor group reported on Tuesday.

According to the report by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a total of 35 airstrikes were carried out after midnight Monday, targetting about 13 districts in al-Raqqa.

Five IS militants were also killed and dozens injured in the air raids, said the Observatory, which says it relies on a network of activisits on the ground inside Syria.

The Observatory said the death toll could rise due to the number of critically wounded people.

It was not clear which side conducted the latest airstrikes. Al-Raqqa has been one of the main targets of the U.S. coalition and Russian warplanes. The IS declared it their capital in Syria in 2014. Endit
